Techie types - wifi boosters
|
This is obviously the place to come (fuck you, gank). Old Victorian property over three floors. Thick walls, ceilings and owner. 13 bedrooms (very, very small hotel) and the wifi will barely reach the 1st floor. Brand new router from Sky which looks shiny and sexy but doesn't perform well - certainly away from the ground floor.
The boosters side perused online appear to be plug-in hobbies which need Ethernet connection to the laptop/device you wish to use upstairs. Obviously this doesn't work with thirteen different sets of guests in thirteen different rooms across three floors.
Is there anything on the market which you can just plug in - maybe one on each floor (?) - which boosts the signal across the property so that every miserable bastard can use wifi and stop whinging at me?
Utterly in your debt for what is sure to be a list of helpful answers.

yep, netgear (and others), do wifi boosters/rage extenders that just plug into the wall.
but some of them (and the one I have - WN3000RP) will create a new/separate network (called _EXT), so you will have to connect to each network as you move around the property.

Try holding your phone up to the air, and raise your right leg.
Always works for me.

You should only need an ethernet connection from the router to the booster that you plug in next to it. All the other boosters will then work wirelessly so you just plug one in on each floor.

I had a problem with getting Wifi in my house, thick floors and its built on a slope so goes down the hill in a L step, was recommended range extenders on each floor, they just plug in, they were a CUNT to set up from memory, that or the bloke doing it didnt do it right *Coughs.............
Didnt cost much, set and forget, Netgear is the brand, only thing i get now and then is they have to be re-set, not sure why, but just turn them off for 10 seconds and turn on again and Wifi comes back, fucked if i know why?

I've been using TP-Link WiFi extenders for a few years, just plug them into a power socket and press a button to pair them up.
Works a treat.

also, the signal from a wifi modem travels better downwards than upwards. So better to have the modem on top floor if you can, and then the boosters on lower floors.
I use these

I was in exactly the same situation a couple of years ago and used the Netgear wifi booster - worked a treat.

I should add that just one was enough for the 1st and 2nd floors.

Power line adaptors will be the best option as long as they are connected to same electrical circuit, may not be possible in such a large property.

I got a power line adapt or that is cheap, easy to install and works a treat.

Ah, so to get a better signal upstairs, just turn the Router upside down then.

Have you considered getting a more powerful wifi router first that will increase coverage? Normally the wifi boxes suppled are considerably weak. If you have to get across numerous floors, starting with a more powerful router may be the only way to provide complete coverage as well as using extenders?
Personally used extenders and did not like them.
I used the Apple Airport Extreme to boost coverage and did not need the extenders. It also backs up our PC's.
Netgear Nighthawk 1900 and 1750 offer really good wifi coverage and speed and are probably more powerful than the Apple product.
If you load a free wifi finder app on your iPhone, it can help you map coverage in the house.
If it was me I would start ground up, get a better router and go from there.

Bollocks. That sage advice could have saved me about £400 two months ago.
